The Las Rozas City Council once again trusts Yllana to create this cultural event that serves as the kick-off for the Inauguration of the Las Rozas School Olympics.
Athletes and Olympic champions such as Gema Hassen Bey (Paralympic athlete), Rafa Pascual (volleyball), Mapi and Majo Sánchez Alayeto (padel tennis), Paula Tabucchi (fencing), Francisco Javier Fernández Aceytuno (Boccia) or Raúl Chapado (triple jump) have today supported the 10,000 schoolchildren who are participating in the Las Rozas School Olympics, which started today, Sunday, after an opening ceremony that included the participation of the Mayor of Las Rozas, José de la Uz, and the Councillor for Sports, Bárbara Fernández, and which featured the performances of the Las Rozas Choir and an acrobatic show organised by us.
The School Olympic Games are now in their 22nd year, promoting clean sport among the municipality’s schoolchildren.
The opening ceremony began in the Plaza Mayor with the lighting of the first torch, which was carried to the Navalcarbón stadium by relay runners accompanied by athletes, to proceed to the lighting of the cauldron on the athletics track by Gema Hassen Bay, on an adapted bicycle with which she wants to achieve the challenge of being the first woman to climb Kilimanjaro, and one of the participating children. In addition, the 29 participating educational centres paraded and another girl took the Olympic oath.
The mayor, José de la Uz, highlighted “the excitement and emotion” with which the schoolchildren and their families experience this event, which is “the excitement and emotion with which Sport is experienced and felt in Las Rozas”. He also thanked the schools and the technicians from the Department of Sports for their efforts to ensure that these Olympic Games are a success and a benchmark for Las Rozas.
During the next week, nearly 10,000 students from educational centres in the municipality will participate in the different events, which will take place in the Navalcarbón sports centre, the Fairgrounds, the Finca de El Pilar and the Pinar de la Dehesa. The sports specialities in which the participants will compete range from Chess to Fencing, including Flag and Beach Volleyball.
