We woke up to some wonderful news: The Opera Locos has been recognised with three Hugo Awards! The Hugos are the most important awards in musical theatre in Argentina, and were presented at the 16th edition of the Hugo Awards for Musical Theatre.
The Argentine production of the show won the Hugo Award for Best Music Hall, Café Concert and/or Musical Variety Show, alongside Best Male Performance for Duilio Smiraglia and Best Female Performance for Constanza Díaz Falú. Three major awards celebrating both the production itself and the extraordinary talent of the Argentine cast.
This version of The Opera Locos premiered on 16 April at the Teatro Politeama in Buenos Aires, in collaboration with Juan José Campanella and 100 Bares Producciones, together with PAC – Performing Arts Content. It was a collaboration we were especially excited about, allowing us to create an Argentine version of the show with an outstanding cast and a personality all of its own.
At the helm of this new production was Joe O’Curneen, Artistic Director of Yllana and one of the creative forces behind The Opera Locos, who brought this Argentine version to the stage, working closely with the new cast to bring the show’s essence, rhythm, humour and theatrical universe to Buenos Aires.
This production was made possible thanks to the commitment of Juan José Campanella, who believed in The Opera Locos from the very beginning and opened the doors of the Teatro Politeama to this new Argentine version. Sharing this project with such an important figure in Argentine cinema and theatre has been an especially exciting experience for us.
For this work to now receive three Hugo Awards, the most important honours in Argentine musical theatre, is a huge recognition of Joe’s work, the talent of the cast and the entire team behind the production. It also fills us with pride to see, once again, the ability of The Opera Locos to grow, reinvent itself and connect with audiences and artists in different countries.
