YLLANA DIRECTS AND PRODUCES “DON JUAN IN ALCALÁ” 2024
Yllana will be in charge of producing this year’s ‘Don Juan in Alcalá’
Joe O’Curneen and David Ottone will direct the performances, which will take place on October 31 and November 1 at the Huerta del Obispo venue.
The Yllana Company, one of the most acclaimed theatre groups on the national scene, will be in charge of producing and staging this year’s ‘Don Juan in Alcalá’, after concluding the relevant open award procedure. The 38th edition of this event, declared a Festival of National Tourist Interest and one of the most powerful events on the Alcalá cultural calendar, will take place on October 31 and November 1 in the walled enclosure of the Huerta del Obispo.
The production, which will be artistically directed by Joe O’Curneen and David Ottone, two of the founders of Yllana, will have a budget of 170,982 euros plus VAT. The contract has an initial duration of one year, extendable to another, according to the information provided by the Department of Culture after concluding the corresponding public tender and award process.
For this process, the department headed by Santiago Alonso has counted on the assessment of a committee of experts made up of members of the National Institute of Performing Arts and Music of the Ministry of Culture, of the General Directorate of Culture and Creative Industries of the Community of Madrid, and of the Spanish Network of Theatres, Auditoriums, Circuits and Festivals of Public Ownership.
A tragicomic Tenorio
For the Don Juan from Alcalá, whose cast will be announced in the coming weeks, the company announces a “tragicomic” proposal in which it will try to balance fidelity to the text and the spirit of José Zorrilla’s work, with the unmistakable seal of Yllana. “Our model is the Spanish literary tradition itself, in which seriousness and mockery go hand in hand and configure a poetic framework in which laughter always has a tragic background and crying, a comic background,” explains the company.
Alcalá has been a regular venue for Yllana throughout the last seasons, with the Alcalá public being able to enjoy some of his most successful shows at the Teatro Salón Cervantes, such as ‘Passport’, ‘Lo Mejor de Yllana’, ‘666’ or, soon, as part of the Teatro en Ferias programme, ‘War Baby’.
